Frequently Asked Questions

1. Optometry exam - Regular eye exams should be part of your preventative healthcare check-list. If you have had a regular eye exam within the last 6 months, you will be able to schedule a Contact Lens Fitting Appointment. If it has been longer than 6 months, you will need to be scheduled for a regular eye exam as well as a Contact Lens Fitting Appointment.

2. Contact lens fitting & training - A contact lens fitting by an optometrist will determine the appropriate contact lens design and verify your initial lenses. The contact lens fitting includes eye measurements and diagnostic lenses that are applied to your eyes.

3. Follow up exam - First time contact-lens patients or current contact lens patients who are trying a new lens will need to be seen one last time to validate the final contact lens prescription and fit. Generally this exam is scheduled for one to two weeks after the fitting appointment.

Contact the medical office where you had your eye exam to request a copy of your prescription. You can find phone numbers here. Contact lens prescriptions are available after the fitting process has been completed.

All contact lenses must be fitted by an optometrist and require a valid prescription to place an order. Make a contact lens appointment with your Kaiser Permanente optometrist for an eye exam and contact lens fitting. After you are fitted, your prescription can be filled at kp2020.org.

Different brands of contact lenses can fit very differently. An optometrist must fit them to your eyes. Through kp2020.org, you can order only lenses for which you have a valid current prescription and that you are wearing successfully. If you want a different brand, make a contact lens appointment with your Kaiser Permanente optometrist for an eye exam and contact lens fitting. After you are fitted and have a prescription for the new brand of contact lenses, your prescription can be filled through kp2020.org.

Contact lenses require a prescription to order, just like medications prescribed by your doctor. When a prescription has expired, no more orders can be filled for you until the optometrist is able to check your vision, the health of your eyes, and the fit of your contact lenses. We recommend you make an appointment with your Vision Essentials optometrist before you run out of your current supply of lenses.

All patients are required to pay the contact lens fitting fee at the time of the appointment prior to being seen. It is necessary to charge the fitting fee so that the optometrist is able to check your vision, the health of your eyes, and the fit of your contact lenses. You can order and purchase your contact lenses from kp2020.org.

Yes, a contact lens prescription includes information relating to your contact lenses, such as lens type, the brand you are wearing, and the parameters needed to order the exact same lens type. Your optometrist may require more frequent exams for contact lens wearers. When you make an appointment for an eye exam, tell the scheduler you wear contact lenses. Depending on your coverage, there may be a fee for this exam.

If you wear contact lenses that are not on Kaiser Permanente Formulary but want the same contact lenses, you can bring in your previous prescription and contact lens box to your contact lens fitting appointment for the optometrist to evaluate.
